David Livingstone

One of the most amazing natural wonders in the world, Victoria Falls, was discovered by Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone. When Livingstone discovered the thundering waterfalls in 1855 while traveling through southern Africa, he gave them the name "Mosi-oa-Tunya," which translates to "The Smoke That Thunders," because of the mist that rises from the cascades. In addition to drawing attention to this magnificent site, his expedition brought the diversity of the African continent's landscapes to light. As he traveled through unexplored areas and dealt with disease and wildlife, Livingstone's expedition was both adventurous and difficult.
